July 29, 2006 Fly Away Magnets

In sticking with the Bug theme from our cupcake of the month I found these cute little bug magnets that are cheap, adorable and fun to make...try making them with your little Bugs. Have fun!

Fly Away Magnets-
You Need-

Acrylic Paints In Colors:

  • Black
  • Blue
  • Bright Pink
  • Dark Lavender
  • Light Blue
  • Light Green
  • Light Pink
  • Orange
  • White
  • Yellow

And

  • Adhesive-Backed Magnetic Strip 3in Long
  • Black Fine-Tiped Marker
  • 3 24 Guage Black Wire 4in Long
  • Craft Glue
  • Craft Snips
  • Needle-Nosed Pliers
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • White Fine Tipped Opaque Marker
  • 6 Wiggle Eyes 4mm
  • 9 Woden Craft Spoons

Directions-

  1. Paint one craft spoon with bright pink, one with blue, one black with yellow stripes and two white.
  2. Paint top halves of two craft spoons with orange and bottom halves with yellow.
  3. Paint top halves of two craft spoons with light green and bottom halves with dark lavender.
  4. Using the end of a paintbrush handle paint dots for cheeks on the bright pink (Butterfly), blue (Dragonfly) and black and yellow striped (Bumblebee) craft spoons with light pink.
  5. Paint dots on butterfly's body with dark lavender.
  6. Draw a nose and mouth on butterfly and dragonfly with a black marker.
  7. Draw a nose and mouth on bumblebee with white marker.
  8. Paint a large dot at the top of each orange/yellow craft spoon (Butterfly Wings) with lime green.
  9. Paint a wavy line from the dot to the center of wings with light green. Paint a large dot at the bottom of each wing with bright pink and then paint a wavy line from dot to center of wings with bright pink.
  10. Paint horizontal wavy lines down dragonfly's body with light green and paint horizontal lines in between the wavy lines with bright pink.
  11. Using the end of the baintbrush handle paint dots at top of each light green/dark lavender craft spoon (Dragonfly Wings) with yellow. Paint dots at bottom of each wing with bright pink and paint dots at top of each white craft spoon (Bumblebee Wings) with light blue.
  12. Randomly draw dots inside yellow stripes on bumblebee's body with the black marker.
  13. Using craft snips cut approximately 1in from bottoms of bumblebee wings and discard.
  14. Glue eyes in place.
  15. Glue matching wings together and then glue appropriate bodies to tops of wings.
  16. To make the antennae bend each length of wire in half and curl each end with needle-nosed pliers then glue in place.
  17. Cut magnetic strips into three 1in magnet lengths.
  18. Remove backing from magnetic strips and adhere to backs of butterfly, dragonfly and bumblebee.
